What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable materials used to add or restore volume in selected facial areas.

Many commonly used fillers are based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance found in the body. Different products vary in firmness, elasticity and intended depth of placement, allowing physicians to select a product according to the treatment area and desired effect.

Important: Results can be visible soon after treatment, but temporary swelling may affect the early appearance. Final assessment should be made after the initial swelling has settled.
02

Areas That May Be Considered

The treatment area and product choice should be based on anatomy and clinical suitability.

Cheeks & MidfaceMay be used to support volume and facial contour in selected cases.
TemplesMay help address selected age-related hollowing when appropriate.
Lips & Perioral AreaMay be considered for lip volume, contour or selected lines around the mouth.
Nasolabial & Facial FoldsMay soften the appearance of selected folds depending on anatomy and treatment plan.
Under-Eye AreaMay be considered in selected patients, but this is a technically sensitive area requiring careful assessment.
Chin, Jawline & NoseStructural fillers may be used for contour refinement in selected cases, with special attention to anatomy and safety.
03

When Will I See Results?

Some change is usually visible immediately after injection, although the early appearance may include temporary swelling or bruising.

As swelling settles, the treatment outcome becomes easier to assess. How long results last varies according to the filler product, treatment area, amount used, metabolism and individual response.

Duration varies: It is more accurate to describe filler longevity as product- and area-dependent rather than promising results for “several years” in every patient.
04

How Treatment Is Planned

Natural-looking filler treatment depends on facial assessment, product selection and careful placement.

01 — Facial AssessmentThe physician evaluates facial proportions, symmetry, volume distribution, skin quality and previous treatments.
02 — Product SelectionThe filler type, treatment area, depth and amount are chosen according to anatomy and treatment goals.
03 — Follow-UpThe result is reviewed after swelling settles, with additional treatment considered only if appropriate.
05

Aftercare

Follow your physician’s instructions after treatment, as recommendations may vary by product and injection area.

  • Keep the treated area clean and avoid unnecessary pressure or manipulation unless instructed otherwise.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the period recommended by your physician.
  • Limit excessive heat exposure, such as saunas or very hot environments, during the early recovery period if advised.
  • Delay facials, lasers, waxing or other procedures around the treated area until your physician confirms it is appropriate.
  • Maintain normal hydration and a balanced lifestyle, but hydration should not be presented as a way to materially prolong filler longevity.
06

Possible Side Effects & Safety

Dermal fillers are medical procedures and are not risk-free.

  • Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising
  • Temporary asymmetry, lumpiness or firmness
  • Infection or inflammatory reactions can occur
  • Rare but serious complications may occur depending on the product and injection site
  • Vascular occlusion is uncommon but potentially serious and requires urgent medical assessment
Seek urgent medical care if you develop severe or increasing pain, unusual blanching or mottling of the skin, vision changes, or other concerning symptoms after filler injection.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dermal Filler FAQs

Are results immediate?

Some change is visible immediately, but swelling can temporarily affect the result. A more reliable assessment is made after the initial swelling settles.

How long do fillers last?

Longevity varies by product, treatment area, amount used, metabolism and individual response. Your physician can discuss the expected duration of the specific filler selected.

Should I drink extra water to make filler last longer?

Normal hydration is important for general health, but there is no need to promise that drinking extra water will significantly prolong filler longevity.

When can I exercise after filler?

The timing depends on the treatment area and physician preference. Strenuous exercise is often limited during the early recovery period to help minimize swelling and bruising.

Why is injector experience important?

Knowledge of facial anatomy, filler characteristics and complication management is important for both aesthetic results and safety.
